There are a lot of reasons to eat out, but what about reasons to eat in? Sometimes you don't feel like eating dinner, but you don't exactly feel like going out either. You could feasibly order in delivery from some generic delivery/take out place, but if you live on the south side of Minneapolis, let me recommend that you hit up Fat Lorenzo's. This South Minneapolis staple is a great little local place thatís suitable for dining in, take out, or delivery. Simple pastas and pizzas adorn the menu which is perfect for blustery winters eve (itís great in the summer time too, especially if you like gelato!).

On a recent evening, it was decided that we would do take out from Fat Lorenzo's because we didnít want to cook and we didnít want to sit in a restaurant. We wanted to sit at home in our sweat pants and eat delicious food. We started out with a few simple appetizers. The artichoke dip is your basic, rich, creamy dip that comes served with buttered garlic toasts. The warm creaminess is paired with a nice hint of acidity to keep it from being over the top rich. We also ordered the Calcinato, which is likened on the menu to an Italian quesadilla. I would have to respectfully disagree, but only because the Calcinato was substantially better than any quesadilla I've ever had. The inside is stuffed with chicken, mushrooms, roasted red peppers, arugula, and mozzarella and then the whole thing is drizzled with a tangy balsamic glaze. It comes served with a side of creamy "special sauce" and instead of using a flour tortilla, like a lot of places probably would, Fat Lorenzo's uses a thinly rolled out pizza crust. The end result is a crispy, rich, and brightly flavored appetizer that's one to put down on the "not to miss" list.

I'm not going to lie. Choosing which pasta's to order was a difficult task. All in all I sampled three different varieties. We "tested" the plain spaghetti and meatballs, the Lorenzo's lasagna, and the picante grassi. I donít typically EVER order your standard variety of spaghetti and meatballs when I go out, but if I ever do again, it'll be from Fat Lorenzo's. Simple spaghetti noodles with a basic, yet deliciously fresh tasting tomato sauce, and dense, moist meatballs. Itís everything a spaghetti should be. The Lorenzo's lasagna is definitely a different kind of beast. It comes stuffed with all kinds of different meats (sausage, pepperoni, etc), cheeses, and veggies. It's really good and if youíre a lasagna lover, this one worth ordering. The picante grassi is one spicy pasta dish. Chopped meatballs and sliced, spicy sausage come served tossed with a spicy giardinera mixture, ricotta cheese, penne noodles, and a touch of tomato sauce. If youíre sensitive to spice, this may not be the dish for you, but if you can handle it, itís worth it! We also had to try a pizza of course. We ordered the veggie pizza, but I had some sausage thrown on half of it. Itís hard not to love the classic Midwest style pizza. The bright tomato sauce and the melty mozzarella were the perfect complement to the fresh veggies and sausage.

I skipped dessert this time, which ultimately I regretted, but if you can manage, save room for their creamy gelato. You won't regret it. If you're in the south Cedar Avenue area of Minneapolis and youíve got yourself a comfort food craving, it's hard to do much better than Fat Lorenzo's. Stop by and sit at the restaurant, take some to go, or if youíre truly feeling catatonic (and you happen to live in their delivery radius) get some for delivery. Youíll be happy that you did!
